MG Motors has had a lengthy and compelling history since being founded in 1920. In 1921, Cecil Kimber joined Morris Cars in 1921 to soon become a general manager the following year.

After Kimber began making his versions of Morris cars to boost sales, the cars took the name from the place they were sold:

Morris Garage.

Due to growing brand popularity, MG outgrew its original facilities. Moving to Abingdon allowed production efforts to continue for the next 50 years.

MG Formative Years: 1930-1949

MG experienced a creative growth period during the 30s and 40s. At the start of the 1930s, the MG Car Club was formed and quickly attracted over 500 members that helped grow the company’s name.

During 1933, MG became the first non-Italian marque to win the Mille Miglia race in Italy. 1945 proved to be a big year for MG, with Americans falling in love with the MG T Type sports cars.

Throughout the 1950s, MG continued making its mark on racing with record-breaking speeds of 245 mph reached with models such as the EX 181.

A year later, MG broke another record as their 1506cc supercharged engine reached speeds of 254 mph.

Our Pick for Overlooked MG Model:

The MG XPower SV is a true stunner. Produced by MG Rover and manufactured in Modena, the 2005 SV model could hit 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 175 mph. Most models of the MG XPower SV were sold in Europe and Asia, with just one supercharged model being sold in America.

Where Is MG Today?

Nowadays, the only cars MG continues to produce are a few models of SUVs, compact cars, and a van. The current owner of MG is SAIC from China.

Lovers of the MG brand are disappointed with the company’s current status as a brand that develops affordable, everyday cars compared to the sporty, performance-driven cars the company used to release.
