Porsche 911 Carrera RSThere have been many sports cars made over the years, but out of all of them the Porsche 911 Carrera is one of the few to make it into the realm of household names.

Since their introduction in Germany and around the globe in the early 1960s, the classic Porsche 911 series for sale has played an important part in high-end motoring history, and is the flagship model of Porsche. The initial concept of a two-door, rear-engine sports car with a recognisable leaned back design has seen many different iterations over the years, from cars focused on extreme high-performance to those with a more elegant, luxurious design. But the 911 has never departed from its principle of an iconic, high performance machine. There is no model that illustrates this better than the Porsche 911 Carrera.

There are many models of the Porsche 911 Carrera for sale– the Carrera RS (manufactured for two years in the early 1970s, the RS standing for ‘Rennsport,’ the German for Race Sport) and later rejuvenated models produced between 1984 and 1989, such as the 911 Carrera Supersport, the 911 Carrera Club Sport (or CS,) the 911 Carrera SE, the 911 Carrera Cabriolet (a soft top,) and the 911 Speedster (not technically a Carrera, but based on the same design).

The RS series were the first Carreras (which take their name from the Pan-American race that the initial models of Carreras were successful in) and are celebrated in the collectors community as one of the best forms of the 911. They had a larger (2687cc) engine than 911s of the time, better suspension and brakes, and added decal such as new spoilers and fenders. The initial Porsche 911 Carrera for sale was also built with two different weights in order to qualify for different races – the RS Touring form, and the Super Lightweight model, which was 220lb lighter.

When the Carrera name was revived in the mid-eighties, it saw a huge amount of changes, with initial models using 80% different parts to the original models – most notably the motors and gearbox. These editions saw many different variations, from sport to luxury models.

Whichever model is bought, the Porsche 911 Carrera will be a highlight in the collection of any classic car collector. Lauded for their style and specifications alike, the Carrera is a small part of a long and glorious Porsche sports car history.
