In Good Times and Bad a 1970’s Porsche is Always a Cool Car

Today, we hear about rising gas prices and the desire for more fuel-efficient cars.  Younger generations might think we are going through some of the most challenging times for those who love fast cars. 1964 Porsche 356C Coupe

But this certainly isn’t the first go around.  The 1970s were also times of high gas prices and talk about fuel-efficient cars.  Yet, today and in the past, when there’s a push for smaller, energy-efficient cars, people still gravitate towards the cool factor of a Porsche sportscar.  Like today, the Porsche brand was going strong and launching new models back then, too.

For example, the Porsche Carrera was launched in 1973.  It boasts a flat-six engine, a power output of 154 kW, and a top speed of 149 mph.  The sporty design, ducktail, and bold Carrera lettering across the body announced this was a sportscar with no excuses.  Excellence Magazine wrote an article sharing Carrera’s new innovative features in the sportscar arena: https://www.excellence-mag.com/issues/292/articles/the-rise-of-the-carrera-rs.

Although Porsche is not designed to be eco-friendly, it has always been innovative.  Depending on the model, a 1970s Porsche can do around 14 – 18 mpg in the city and 20 – 24 on the highway.  Air-cooling features included the whale tale, which increased airflow to the turbocharger and downforce. That’s not that bad, even for 2024!

There are many reasons why someone becomes a Porsche enthusiast. Following the sportscars ‘ evolution, a young man might have grown up with Porsche posters on their walls dreaming of the day they will buy their own.  Some recall the blast of sitting in the passenger seat while Grandpa cruised down the highway.  Maybe they want to relive the first time they sat behind the wheel and experienced the energy of first-class standards and exceptional style.

A Porsche is Not Meant to Live a Small Life

“Fuel efficiency” isn’t why someone is interested in a Porsche.  Not when it is a motorsport thoroughbred!  The Porsche racecars have won over thirty thousand victories and championships.  The brand walked away from racing after winning the 1998 Le Mans with a Porsche 911 GT1.  The company noted financial reasons for the decision.  Many of us think this isn’t the end of their racing career.  Car enthusiasts frequently agree that Porsche was the best sportscar ever made.  It is a champion on the racetrack and on the road.  It’s clear this car wasn’t designed to live a “common” existence.

The 1970s Porsche models may be a few decades old, but their charisma continues to attract admirers of all generations.  Porsche devotees may also own a fuel-efficient hybrid car, which they use for regular chores.  But they want their Porsche 911 for “special occasions.” It’s a thrill to ride along the California Coastline in a 1965 Porsche 356C  Coupe or arrive at a cocktail party in a 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. Wherever someone drives their classic Porsche, it will stand out from the crowd!
